Levels and topics

Pick a level and a topic on Home. There are 6 levels, from Starter (Pre-A1) to Advanced (C1), and 16 topics, from Animals and Food & Drinks to Technology and Science & Space. Every level is open — start wherever feels right. The next puzzle is the first one you have not solved yet; after that, the first with fewer than 3 stars.

Who Am I? (the main game)

A mystery word is hiding behind the card. Read the clues — written as “I …” — and guess it. Clue 1 is the hardest; open the next clue when you are stuck. Guess with up to 3 clues open for 3 stars, with 4 clues for 2 stars, or after the picture for 1 star; each wrong word costs a star. Tap the letter tiles to spell the answer. You have 3 hearts: a wrong word costs a heart, and with no hearts left the word waits for later. Great to play together.

Word Wheel

Swipe across the letters on the wheel, then lift, to make words. Every word fills the small crossword. A real word that is not in the crossword is a bonus and gives 2 coins. A letter hint costs 10 coins; Shuffle shows the letters in a new order. No hints gives 3 stars, 1–2 hints 2 stars, more 1 star. A Word Wheel puzzle is never lost.

Groups

The words hide groups of four. Pick four that belong together and tap Submit. Levels 1–2 have 8 words in 2 groups and allow 2 mistakes; levels 3–6 have 16 words in 4 groups and allow 4 mistakes. Watch for traps: some words seem to fit two groups. “One away…” means three of your four are right. No mistakes gives 3 stars, one mistake 2 stars, more 1 star. Groups puzzles go by level, not by topic.

Code Word

Guess the secret word in 6 tries: type a word and tap Enter. Green means the right letter in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word but in another place, grey means it is not in the word. The word is 4 letters at levels 1–2, 5 at levels 3–4 and 6 at levels 5–6, and fits the topic. Solving in 1–3 guesses gives 3 stars, 4–5 guesses 2 stars, 6 guesses 1 star.

Hints and Continue

In Who Am I? and Code Word a hint places one correct letter after a short optional ad (free with Remove Ads); a hint keeps the stars at 2 at most. In Word Wheel, hints use coins, and when you are short you can watch an optional ad for more coins. When a puzzle is lost you may continue once (+1 heart, +1 try or +1 mistake) after an optional ad, or for free with Remove Ads.

English Passport

Solve 8 Who Am I? words of a topic at one level to earn its stamp. Stamps raise your rank from Tourist to Explorer, Traveler, Globetrotter, Ambassador and Legend. The Passport also shows your stars in every game.

Word Book

Every word you solve goes into your Word Book, newest first, with a picture and, for Who Am I? words, an easy example clue. Tap the speaker to hear a word. Words you spelled in Hangman for Kids can be added from Hangman’s Next step card and are marked as learned in Hangman.

Read aloud

The game reads clues and words with your iPhone or iPad’s built-in English voice. Turn it on or off in Settings → Read aloud. If your device has no English voice, the switch stays off.

Leaderboard, account and sync

All of this is optional and only for players 13 and over; the game asks a year-of-birth question first. Tap Leaderboard on Home to sign in to Game Center and see the “Total Stars” leaderboard. In Settings → Account & sync you can also create an email account: verify your email address, then your total stars are backed up and restored on another device (the higher total wins). Use Forgot password? to get a reset email, Sync now to sync at once, and Delete account to remove the account (account and data deletion). Everything else stays on your device.

Ads

There are never ads during a puzzle or when the app opens. A full-screen ad may appear when you leave a result (not in your first 3 puzzles, then at most every 2 puzzles and at least 3 minutes apart). Sometimes it shows another Patcell game instead. Remove Ads turns full-screen ads off.

Restore purchases

Bought Remove Ads on another device or before reinstalling? Open Settings → Restore purchases, signed in with the same Apple ID you used to buy it.

Saved data

Your stars, Passport stamps, Word Book, coins, stats, settings and an unfinished puzzle are saved on this device. Settings → Clear data on this device removes them. See the privacy policy.
